FAQ about switching electricity providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have chosen to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). That distributor will continue to supply electricity to your premises even if you change to another energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in under 24 hours. However, the switchover cannot take place until after your old provider has issued you their final bill, and they'll only be able to do that after the next time they read your meter. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we also tell your present provider that you're moving to another provider. The switch to the new provider won't happen immediately, though, because your current provider will have to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you their final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your home continues to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation in Adelaide

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first step involved establishing an intra-state electricity grid which allowed electricity that was produced in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the breaking up of state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In order to stimulate a greater degree of competition the market was split into two levels

Distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.

Retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Each state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The Adelaide market was completely deregulated in July 2013. This allowed customers to change to another provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

Tips for reducing your electricity usage to save money

Here are some easy to implement tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • Minimise use of your clothes dryer. Dry your clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warm clothing (jumper, beanie, booties, warm socks).
  • Minimise draughts. Prevent hot or cold air blowing in or leaving via gaps under doors or around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so that you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening windows in the evening let the cool air in, and closing them in the morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
  • Use less lighting by using natural light where possible and replace older lights with energy efficient LED lights.
