Electricity Market Competition and Deregulation in NSW

The electricity market in Australia has been undergoing a deregulation that began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next step, which happened sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to create better competition the energy market was split into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
The distributors have the responsibility for the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and are responsible for billing. The states have between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

NSW 's electricity market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that consumers could now switch to the provider that had the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by three distributors

  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid supplies energy to inner, eastern and northern metropolitan Sydney and north to the Hunter region and Newcastle.
  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy supplies electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses throughout Sydney's Greater West, the Southern Highlands and Blue Mountains.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity country and regional NSW, and also throughout southern regional QLD.

Tips to lower your electricity consumption to save on your bills

Here are a few easy to implement ways to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, dress for the weather (beanie, warm socks, jumper, booties).
  • Use a hot water bottle as a cheap alternative to an electric blanket.
  • Turn off all your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Avoid use of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce air conditioning use by opening the windows during the night to allow the cool air in, and shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Reduce the use of lights. Use natural light more often.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Stop the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms where the sun shines in.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens once you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision that you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider allows you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your house even when you switch over to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you have to purchase it from an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply won't be interrupted because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often within 24 hours. But the actual switchover will not happen until your present provider has issued your final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will inform your current provider of your move away from them. The actual transfer to your new provider will not happen straight away, though, because the old provider needs to do a final meter reading. and then send you their final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. However, we will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
