Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in NSW

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been gradually deregulating which began in the late 1990s. The first step was to establish a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states, was the splitting up of state owned monopolies into several competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote more competition the market was separated into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
Distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and maintain the powerlines and poles, but do not deal directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers have all the interactions with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. Each state has between one and three distributors but up to thirty retailers.

NSW 's energy market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2014 . This meant that customers could switch to another provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors

  • Ausgrid
Ausgrid's network supplies electricity to eastern, northern and inner metropolitan Sydney and north to Newcastle and the Hunter region.
  • Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity regional and country NSW, and also in southern regional QLD.
  • Endeavour Energy
Endeavour Energy's network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses across the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains and Sydney's Greater West.

Tips to lower electricity consumption and lower your bills

Here are a few easily implemented tips to reduce your electricity consumption

  • Turn all appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, beanie, booties, jumper).
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors and around windows by using door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Avoid use of the clothes dryer. Hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Use less lighting. Use natural light more often. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Close the doors to areas of the house that you don't use, so you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening allow the house cool down, and then closing them in the morning to keep the hot air out.
  • Prevent the sun over-heating your home by closing blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you have finished the comparison process and have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider has to give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days during which you can change your mind and remain with your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The actual delivery of energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply the electricity to your house when you switch to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you must to buy it from one of the retailers that resells the distributor's energy. You can be certain that you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in under 24 hours. However, the actual switchover can't happen until your current provider has issued you a final bill, and that can't happen until a final meter reading has been taken. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading is. It could take up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and will also notify your current provider that you're moving to another provider. The actual changeover to your new provider won't happen immediately, though, because the old provider will need to do one final meter reading. then send you their final bill. Your new provider only starts charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).
