Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage involved establishing a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold to customers in a different state.

The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of the state owned monopolies into multiple competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater level of competition the energy market was split into two levels

  • Energy Distributors
    The distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the powerlines and poles, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. Every state has from one to three distributors but up to 30 retailers.

The market in South East Queensland was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016. This allowed consumers to change to a provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.

There are only two distributors supplying electricity to Queensland

  • Energex
    Energex distributes electricity in an area covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, that stretches from the NSW border in the south to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Ipswich, Redlands, Logan and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
    The Ergon Energy network services rural and coastal areas of Queensland as well as remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips for using less electricity to save money

Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Turn off all appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (warm socks, booties, beanie, jumper).
  • Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or getting out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the house cool down, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only heat or cool a smaller space.
  • Prevent the sun from over-heating your home by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.

This section contains questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and decided you want to switch electricity providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days during which you can change your mind and go back to your old energy provider.
No, definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor will continue to supply the electricity to your house even when you change to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity bills, but they purchase the energy from the distributor at wholesale rates and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity directly from a distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, you won't experience an interruption to your electricity supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. But the switchover cannot happen until after your current provider has issued your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and will notify your present provider that you're changing providers. The actual change to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because your current provider will need to read your meter again, one final time. and then send you a final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
