Compare Electricity and Gas in these States

Our energy comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated energy market. Each energy provider only supplies energy to some regions, therefore the number of energy providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, you can only purchase energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and have made the decision to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new energy provider will give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No, Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor will continue to supply energy to your house even when you switch to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your energy bills, but they buy the energy at wholesale rates from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from the distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your energy supply because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the actual switchover cannot happen until your current provider has sent you their final bill, and they can only do that once they've read your meter one final time. So, it depends on when your next meter reading be. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we inform your current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual switch to your new provider will not happen immediately, because the old provider needs to do a meter reading one final time. and then send you a final bill. Your new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor that supplies the energy to your premises continues to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new energy provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Reduce your energy bills with these energy -saving tips

Here are a few easy to implement tips to reduce how much energy you use

  • Eliminate draughts. Prevent hot or cold air getting in or out through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, dress for cold weather (jumper, warm socks, beanie, booties).
  • Reduce usage of the clothes dryer. Dry your clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Minimise air conditioning use by opening your windows in the evening let the cool air in, and shutting them in the morning to keep hot air out.
  • Close doors to rooms that you don't use, so that you only have to cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your house by closing curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Minimise lighting. Rely on natural light if possible. Turn lights off when you leave the room.
