Electricity Market Competition in Qld

The electricity market in Australia has been gradually deregulating since the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in a different state.

The next step, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the dividing up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to create more competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
    The distributors manage the delivery of electricity to customers' premises . They own and manage the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have between one and three distributors, and up to 30 retailers.

South East Queensland 's energy market was completely deregulated on 1 July 2016 . This meant that consumers could, for the first time, change to whichever provider had the cheapest electricity prices.

There are two electricity distributors in Queensland

  • Energex
    The Energex network distributes electricity to premises in a region covering about 25,000 square kilometres in South East Queensland, which stretches from the border of NSW to Gympie in the north. Including the major population areas of Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
  • Ergon Energy
    The Ergon Energy network supplies electricity to coastal and rural areas of Queensland and remote communities in outback Queensland and the Torres Strait.

Tips for how to use less energy to save on your bills

Here is a list of easily implemented ways for reducing your energy consumption

  • Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather, rather than turn on the heater, (beanie, warm socks, booties, jumper).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Don't use the clothes dryer as frequently. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • Minimise the use of air conditioning by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and then shutting them each morning thus keeping hot air out.
  • Reduce the use of lights through the use of as much natural light as possible. Turn the lights off if there's no none in the room.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing the curtains and blinds in the rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to areas of your home that aren't in use, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.

FAQ about switching energy providers

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens after you've completed the comparison process and you have made the decision you want to switch energy providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new energy provider will allow you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). That distributor continues to supply energy to your house after you change over to a different energy retailer. The retailer issues your energy bills, however, they buy the energy from the distributor at wholesale rates and resell it to you. You can't buy energy directly from your distributor, you have to go through an energy retailer. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your energy supply will not be interrupted because you'll continue to use the same connection to the same distributor.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in less than 24 hours. However, the switchover won't go ahead until after your present provider has issued you your final bill, and that can't be done until a final meter reading has been taken. So, it depends on how long until your next meter reading. It could take as long as three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll inform the current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual move over to the new provider will not happen straight away, though, because the current provider needs to do one final meter reading. and then send you a final bill. The new provider only begins charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who supplies the energy to your house continues to be the same one as before the switch.
