FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision to change electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider will give you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, that means that you have ten days to cancel the process and go back to your current energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The delivery of actual energy to your house, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply electricity to your premises even when you change to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy energy from the distributor, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be sure that your electricity supply won't be interrupted when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor continues to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the switchover cannot happen until after your old provider has sent your final bill, and they cannot do that until after your next meter reading. Therefore, it depends on how soon your next meter reading happens. It be up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we will also tell your present provider that you're changing providers. The transfer to the new provider will not happen immediately, though, because your current provider will have to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. The new provider will begin charging you from the date of the meter reading. the distributor that supplies the energy to your home will continue to be the same one as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. We will be paid a commission by the new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for using less electricity to save money

Here are a few easy to implement tips for reducing your usage of electricity

  • Minimise usage of your clothes dryer. Dry clothes outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Eliminate draughts. Minimise hot or cold air blowing in or leaving through gaps under doors or around windows through the use of gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Turn all your appliances off at the power socket when they're not in use.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, jumper, booties, warm socks).
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Close doors to areas of the house that you aren't using, so you only have to cool or heat a smaller area.
  • Minimise lighting by using natural light where possible.
  • Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows at night-time to allow the cooler air in, and shutting them in the morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Stop the hot sun over-heating rooms by closing curtains and blinds in the rooms into which the hot sun directly shines in.
