Compare Electricity and Gas in these States

Our electricity comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated electricity market. Each energy provider only supplies energy to some regions, therefore the number of electricity providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, it is only possible to purchase energy from one provider in your region.

FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to questions about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and you have made the decision you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay, your new electricity provider allows you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days during which you can cancel the process and remain with your current energy provider.
Absolutely not! The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor continues to supply electricity to your house even if you switch over to another energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they buy the energy from the distributor at wholesale rates, then resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from the distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be confident that when you switch retailers, your electricity supply will not be interrupted because you will continue to have the same connection to your distributor.
The 'paperwork' is all processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. However, the final switchover will not take place until your present provider has issued you your final bill, and they can only do that once they've read your meter one final time. Therefore, it depends on how long until your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
Compare and Connect will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we'll inform your current provider that you are changing to another retailer. The actual move over to the new provider won't happen straight away, though, because the old provider needs to do one final meter reading. then issue you their final bill. Your new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the distributor who feeds the energy to your premises continues to be the same as it was before the switch.
No. Our comparison and switching service is free to you. Instead, we will receive a commission from your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips to lower electricity consumption to save on your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways to reduce how much electricity you use

  • Reduce draughts. Minimise cold air or hot air getting in or out via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Instead of turning on the heater, put on warmer clothing (beanie, warm socks, booties, jumper).
  • Turn off your appliances at the power point when they're not in use.
  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Avoid using the clothes dryer. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
  • Minimise air conditioning usage by opening your windows in the evening allow the cool air in, and closing them each morning to keep hot air out.
  • Reduce your use of lights. Use natural light more often.
  • Stop the sun from over-heating your house by closing the blinds and curtains in the rooms where the sun shines in.
  • Close the doors to areas of your home that you don't use, so you only have to heat or cool a smaller space.
