Australia's electricity market has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in another state.
Another stage, which occurred sooner in some states than others, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to stimulate a greater level of competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
The distributors manage the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers. - Energy Retailers Retailers sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. The states have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.
On 1 July 2008 , the market in Victoria was completely deregulated. This meant that consumers could, for the first time, switch to another provider that had cheaper electricity prices.
Electricity in Victoria is supplied by five distributors

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save money
Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce how much you spend on electricity
- Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air blowing in or leaving through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
- Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Hang clothes to dry outside or alternatively, use an indoor clothing rack.
- Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (booties, beanie, jumper, warm socks).
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Turn off your appliances at the power socket when they're not in use.
- Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so you just cool or heat a smaller area.
- Stop the sun from over-heating rooms by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
- Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
- Reduce the use of air conditioning by opening your windows during the night to let the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.
