The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a gradual process of deregulation since the late 1990s. The first step of deregulation was to establish a national electricity network {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be delivered in other states.
The next stage, which occurred earlier in some states than others, was the splitting up of state owned electricity monopolies into several competing entities and then privatising them. In an attempt to promote a greater level of competition the market was split into two types of entities
- Energy Distributors
The distributors are responsible for the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and maintain the poles and powerlines, and don't engage directly with customers. - Energy Retailers The electricity retailers are the ones who sell the electricity to the customers and manage the billing. States have between 1 and 3 distributors and up to 30 retailers.
The market in South East Queensland was fully deregulated on 1 July 2016. This meant that customers could now change to a provider that offered the cheapest electricity prices.
Electricity in NSW is supplied by the following three distributors
- Essential Energy
Essential Energy distributes electricity regional and country NSW, and in southern regional QLD. - Endeavour Energy
The Endeavour Energy network provides electricity to 2.4 million people in households and businesses located in Sydney's Greater West, the Blue Mountains, and Southern Highlands. - Ausgrid
The Ausgrid network supplies electricity to inner, northern and eastern metropolitan Sydney and in the Hunter region and Newcastle.
Tips for using less electricity and lower your bills
Here are some easy to implement ways for reducing your electricity consumption
- A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
- Eliminate draughts. Stop cold air or hot air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
- Wear warmer clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, booties, beanie, jumper).
- Use the clothes dryer less often. Instead, hang clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
- Turn off all appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
- Reduce your use of lights by making use of the available natural light. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
- Use less air conditioning by opening the windows at night-time to let the house cool down, and closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
- Close doors to rooms that aren't in use, so you only heat or cool a smaller space.
- Prevent the sun from over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
